Anesthesiology Research Focus
The Department of Anesthesiology at UC San Diego is home to a vibrant research community, comprising 3 Research Centers and 15 Research Laboratories. Our faculty includes basic, translational, and physician scientists who leverage cutting-edge techniques in genomics, proteomics, cell and molecular biology, physiology, and gene therapy aiming to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for neurological and cardiovascular diseases, microbial infections, inflammatory disorders, and chronic pain states. Our research enterprise is led by Drs. Veronica Shubayev (Vice Chair of Basic Science Research) and Mark Wallace (Vice Chair of Clinical Research). We foster a thriving culture of multidisciplinary collaboration, marked by exchange of intellectual and technical resources within UC San Diego, including its Sanford Stem Cell Institute, Institute for Empathy & Compassion and Center for Psychedelic Research, as well as with our affiliated partners at the Salk Institute, Scripps Research, and the VA San Diego. Together, we are advancing transformative science and training the next generation of leaders in anesthesiology and pain research.
