Therapeutic Nanocarriers

nanocarriers

Nanoparticle Design

Poor ability of drugs to cross intact neurovascular barriers limits their therapeutic efficacy in neurological and mental health disorders. Nanoparticles can be designed as trackable, intact neurovascular barrier-crossing drug and gene carriers.

Our Research

These unique properties of nanoparticles are revolutionizing the field of personalized medicine (reviewed in 1). We work to understand the interface of nanoparticles with cells of the nervous and immune systems in order to develop potent and safe nanoparticles for therapeutic, diagnostic and theranostic platforms (2-4). In follow-up to our Controlled Release Society Jorge Heller Outstanding Paper research in designing silicacoated magnetic nanobowls (5), we are working to develop new generation nanodevices (bowls and nano-golf balls (6), as shown in the micrograph (courtesy of Ratnesh Lal at UC San Diego).
