Our group has a continued interest in the intervening variables that account for functional deficits that occur following permanent and reversible cerebral ischemia. Using well defined rat models, such as the middle cerebral artery ligation, in which behavioral and changes in histopathology in specific brain regions, such as the hippocampus, are quantitatively defined, we have pursued work in several principal areas: i) Cerebral protection by anesthetic agents such as etomidate, isoflurane or thiopental; ii) Relevance of nitric oxide to the evolution of cerebral ischemic injury; iii) Effects of manipulation of oncotic and osmotic pressure on edema formulation after simulated head injury using a fluid percussion injury followed by large volume isovolemic exchange with saline, hetastarch, half normal saline and whole blood; iv) Effects of stroma free hemoglobin on cerebral physiology and its relevance in the setting of ischemic cerebral insult. We also have a continuing interest in methods of clinical monitoring of neural function during surgical interventions. One such line of investigation has focuses on the utility of motor evoked responses. More recently, we have begun a systematic collaboration with Dr. Martin Marsala in investigating the biology of intracranial cell implants. Using a variety of cell lines and transfected culture systems, we are examining the growth, and development of these systems in the normal injured hippocampus and cortex.
