Division of Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain at UC San Diego

The Division of Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain at the University of California, San Diego is at the forefront of clinical service, research, and innovation for pain management. We strive to provide world-class clinical care for our patients and offer only the most up-to-date and effective approaches to treating pain associated with surgery and different types of injury. Our team has expertise in acute pain management for patients undergoing breast surgeries, joint replacements, extremity surgery, orthopedic trauma, colorectal surgery, surgical oncology, gynecological surgery, burn injuries, to name a few. In addition, we provide pain management outside of the hospital by providing ambulatory nerve blocks with continuous infusions. This allows many of our patients to have excellent pain control at home for the first few days after surgery when pain can be at its peak.

Annual Conference in Regional Anesthesia

This annual event, hosted by the Department of Anesthesiology at the Center for the Future of Surgery in La Jolla, California and will take place November 4-5, 2017

The Saturday morning lectures by our panel of experts will present basic and advanced techniques of upper and lower extremities and trunk peripheral nerve blocks, ultrasound guidance, and continuous perineural infusions.

On Sunday, the main emphasis of this course is hands-on learning.  Cadaver dissections prepared by our faculty will allow participants to study peripheral nerve anatomy firsthand.  The ultrasound workshops will give participants the opportunity to identify surface anatomic landmarks and correlate them to cross-sectional imaging at the point of care as well as practice real-time needle guidance.

We will offer an optional Advanced Ultrasound Workshop for regional anesthesia to a limited number of participants who have already mastered basic skills in ultrasound-guided nerve blockade to learn advanced techniques from our expert faculty in a small group setting. The Advanced Workshop is limited and participants must be enrolled in the entire workshop.

We hope that you will be able to join us. This course will offer you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a comprehensive learning environment dedicated specifically to the practice of regional anesthesia.  Please continue to workshop page for more details.

UCSD Regional Preceptorship Program

Are you an anesthesiologist in practice and need to brush up on your regional anesthesia knowledge?  Looking for an opportunity to observe ultrasound-guided  nerve blocks and continuous catheter placement?  Want advice on developing your own regional anesthesia practice and instituting effective billing strategies?

Due to popular demand generated by our many educational workshops, UCSD now offers a one to two day observational preceptorship program for clinicians in practice who are interested in seeing what we do firsthand. Preceptorship participants will receive direct patient-oriented education.  All aspects of regional anesthesia practice from preoperative education through postoperative follow-up, including pearls for performing specific procedures, will be covered.  Space is limited.
